The 2016 MacBook Pro 13'' with or without Touch Bar was a significant update to the portable Mac computer, being thinner and more powerful than the previous generation. The "big" novelty was the introduction of the Touch Bar. However, the hard drive is now soldered to the motherboard on the version with Touch Bar. Fortunately, this is not the case for the version with a standard keyboard. But it signals that it will soon no longer be possible to change the hard drive on a Mac laptop. We are not big fans of this evolution because if a chip on the SSD fails, the data is permanently lost. Therefore, we encourage you to make regular Time Machine backups. Many MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar were sold with small 128GB hard drives, and if users find the space insufficient on the disk, they must consider replacing the entire computer, which is a shame...

This model has been plagued by various generational issues. The most troublesome and expensive problem is that, over time, as the screen is opened and closed, the cable for the screen or its backlight eventually bends and cuts the copper traces. When this happens, the screen is black even though the Mac is turned on. Apple acknowledged the issue and offered a warranty extension, which has now expired. In the case that your MacBook Pro is affected by the "flexgate," you need to change the entire screen for a simple problem of a worn cable...

This model also "benefited" from the infamous new "butterfly" mechanism for the keyboard keys. While the old mechanism was extremely robust, Apple designed a thinner mechanism supposed to improve key stability. Unfortunately, with wear, the keys no longer return, do not respond, do not appear on the screen when pressed, or conversely, keys repeat. These keyboards were also subject to a warranty extension that is no longer valid today...

Motherboard issues are also worth mentioning, such as capricious USB-C controllers: sometimes the charger is not detected even when plugged in, causing the battery not to charge. When this problem arises, you need to replace the USB controller on the motherboard through a micro soldering repair, which we are fortunately capable of doing. The same goes for the SSD controller on the model without Touch Bar with a 128GB and 256GB hard drive, which causes random cutouts/kernel panic.

Lastly, some batteries from this generation had an abnormally short lifespan and stopped holding a charge very early in the life of the computer.

In short, the MacBook Pro 13" sold between 2016 and 2017 may have put off many users from buying another Apple computer. However, we want to clarify that many users did not and will never have any problems with their machines. But those who do will be happy to know that iClinique can repair most issues with this model, including changing the SSD hard drive on the model without Touch Bar.
